A division = 11 Races REGATTA HIGHLIGHTSSATURDAY: With several schools bringing both varsity and jv teams, 20 boats were on the starting line for two days of racing. Maine Maritime coach Butch Minson, serving as principal race officer, indicated this was the first time all twenty MMA boats were used in a Regatta. In terms of numbers of boats on the starting line, this appears to be one of the largest NESSA regattas this spring. Wind started east, southeast and oscillated across 40°, with wind speed from five to fifteen. Overall a beautiful day in Smith Cove across from Castine and the Maine Maritime campus. Temperatures were in the low to mid sixties with six races completed in both divisions. At the end of the day Saturday, Casco Bay led Tabor in a close contest for first. SUNDAY: From day break through noon, we had a light drizzle and heavy overcast, the wind switching to the northwest, and continuing to oscillate through 45°, generally eight-twelve knots, dropping to two or three knots for the final race of the day. With five A division races on Sunday, and no races to start after three PM, a general recall and the need to stop the sequence because of a 45° shift in wind direction, resulted in a race against the clock. The final B division race started with one minute before the sundown rule. Casco Bay held onto their lead over Tabor Academy with Marblehead High School finishing third. As the sailors came off the water, the sort out began, the protests that had been filed were withdrawn, and the Regatta committee was able to launch right into its raffle and trophy presentation. In addition to Regatta results, Casco Bay won the Maine State High School Sailing Championship for 2004, the A division from Tabor Academy received the trophy for Outstanding Individual Performance and James Lawsing of tenth place GSA was selected for the Regatta sportsmanship trophy. By 4:30, most of the teams were on the road for their long drives home.
